High Beams
It’s three o’clock
in the morning. You’re driving across the winding mountains of West Virginia.
There is a cool summer nip in the air whipping through the window. The sweet
forest scent is the only thing keeping you sane as you stare into nothingness.
That is precisely how it feels. You can only see as far as the headlights
shine. The stars and moon are hiding behind clouds. The sky is pitch black. There
is no way to distinguish between highway, mountain or a rounded cliff’s edge
until you’re on it.
A choked grunt
of a snore escapes your youngest child’s nose. You dare a glance in the
rearview mirror. From the soft green glow of the dashboard you check on all
your sleeping children. As you turn your gaze back to the silent curving
roadway a quick flash between trees ignites your senses, heightening them to
that of a lioness on the prowl.
Nothing happens.
You wait.
Still nothing
comes.
You ease back
into your seat, concentrate on the road ahead. In a blink of an eye a huge semi-truck
rounds the mountain side. Its high beams blinding you.
Yelling
profanities that would make a sailor blush, all in your head so as not to wake
the children. You blink fifty times, turn off your high beams because you’re a
polite driver, and pray your night vision returns by the time you reach another
dark patch of highway.
Moral to this tale: Be polite in all matters of
life.
This happened to
me so often on our way to Myrtle Beach two weeks ago that these dramatic prose
lodged themselves in my brain. Although to be honest, it was read by the
narrator for Honest Trailers.
For those who
haven’t seen Honest Trailers here their Game of Thrones trailer.
